AI regulation is essential to ensure safety, security and ethics

The EU is considering a ban on AI for mass surveillance and social credit scores

The Verge, April 14, 2021

Today it is difficult to imagine an area of human activity in which artificial intelligence systems would not be involved. However, the European Union is currently considering limiting the use of istically artificial intelligence for certain purposes.

Similar to how it happens with the EU’s regulation of digital privacy under GDPR legislation, the European Union is considering banning certain uses of AI apart from China and the US. In order for the draft draft to take effect, it is necessary to create evaluation commissions to check the work of highly critical artificial intelligence systems.

Among the ways to use AI that have been banned there are, for example, mass surveillance and social credit ratings. However, a number of experts believe that this section of the draft needs revision, since the existing descriptions of the restrictions are rather vague and contain non-specific formulations.

Everything that is currently known about future restrictions is only a rough draft. However, at the moment it is difficult to say what will be limited by the European Union in fact, since the official announcement is scheduled for April 21. In addition, even after the official announcement, the restrictions will be subject to change following feedback from MEPs as well as implementation in each nation state.

Trust and ethics at the core of Scotland’s new AI strategy

Pincent Masons, March 31, 2021

Scotland intends to become a leader in the development and distribution of reliable and secure artificial intelligence publicating an AI strategy and playbook.

According to the experts at Pinsent Masons, the law firm supporting Out-Law, publications aim to make trust and ethics at the core of the use of AI in Scotland. The Data Lab, Scotland’s innovation hub for data science and artificial intelligence, has decided to support the Scottish government in developing an artificial intelligence strategy. The strategy should help the government identify ways to strengthen and grow the artificial intelligence ecosystem across businesses, academics and organizations in the next five years.

The principles highlighted are applicable to all stages of the development and use of AI from concept creation to regulatory issues. These actions are necessary to build confidence in artificial intelligence systems at all stages of its development and use.

“There is a growing and global focus on the regulation of AI and in that context, the release of the Scottish government’s AI strategy strengthens the opportunity that Scottish businesses have to become leaders in the field. With new AI regulations being developed in the EU and the Westminster government setting out its proposed approach to the use of AI in the UK, we can expect trust and ethics to take centre stage in both governmental policy and associated regulatory regimes.  What remains to be seen is how much influence any new EU regulation will have on the way that Scotland implements its AI strategy over the short to medium term,” technology expert Matthew Godfrey-Faussett commented.
