UN passes resolution promoting safe, secure AI for sustainable development

The United Nations General Assembly has ratified a resolution aimed at advancing the cause of safe, secure, and reliable artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable development. Spearheaded by the United States, the resolution garnered unanimous support from all 193 member states, signifying a global consensus on the importance of AI governance.
The resolution is crafted to bridge the digital disparities both within and between nations, with a specific focus on fostering safe and trustworthy AI systems to expedite progress towards achieving the objectives outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It calls upon member states, alongside various stakeholders including the private sector, civil society, and media institutions, to collaborate in developing and endorsing regulatory frameworks to ensure the safety and security of AI technologies.
Speaking at a press briefing, US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, underscored the resolution’s emphasis on capacity building and narrowing the digital divides to ensure that the benefits of AI are accessible to all. She highlighted the resolution as a pivotal stride towards harnessing AI’s potential to address global challenges, from saving lives and alleviating poverty to safeguarding the environment and fostering a more just and secure world.
US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, hailed the resolution as a landmark achievement in the quest for safe and trustworthy AI systems. He emphasized the framework’s provisions for international collaboration, emphasizing principles such as equitable access, risk mitigation, privacy protection, and combating bias and discrimination. Sullivan pledged continued efforts to bolster global cooperation and navigate the multifaceted implications of AI.
