The ratio that belongs on your risk register: 82 to 1. For every human identity in the average enterprise, there are 82 machine identities (API keys, service accounts, OAuth tokens, and AI agents) that routinely hold more access than the people they work for.
In August 2025, attackers turned that imbalance into a breach. By stealing OAuth tokens from a single chatbot integration, Salesloft’s Drift, they reached over 700 organizations in ten days, including Cloudflare, Zscaler, and others. No passwords were stolen, no MFA bypassed, no CVEs exploited. The tokens were the identity, and they inherited the trust of hundreds of downstream systems.
This is the structural problem behind ASI03: Identity & Privilege Abuse. AI agents don’t get their own identities; they inherit yours. Their permissions accumulate rather than being scoped. And their tokens outlive the tasks that needed them. OWASP ranks it #3 because it sets the blast radius for every other agent risk: a goal hijack or a tool misuse is only as damaging as the credentials the agent happens to be holding when it fires.
The practical consequence is that every agent becomes an aggregation point for credentials — and compromising one is cheaper than phishing a hundred humans. This guide is how you close that gap.
TL;DR
Agents are identity aggregation points. Every AI agent operates with the combined authority of every token, key, and credential assigned to it. Compromise one agent, inherit all its permissions.
Machine identities are a time bomb. They vastly outnumber human identities in the average enterprise. Most of them are invisible, over-privileged, and never rotated.
The Salesloft Drift breach was a preview. 700+ organizations breached through a single OAuth token theft. The tokens were the identity.
The Confused Deputy problem has evolved. Agents with legitimate permissions can be manipulated into misusing them, and traditional IAM can’t distinguish legitimate requests from manipulated ones.
Agents need their own identities. Not inherited human sessions. Not shared service accounts. Per-agent, task-scoped, time-bound credentials with full audit trails.
The one-sentence version: your AI agent has more access than most of your employees, no identity of its own, and attackers know that stealing its tokens is easier than phishing a human.
ASI02, ASI03, and ASI04 all revolve around credentials, tokens, and delegated permissions. Identity is the common thread.
Traditional IAM doesn’t work
Human-centric IAM assumes the actor can be authenticated. Agents act through delegated bearer credentials. There’s no one to re-authenticate, so anyone holding the token is treated as the actor.

The fundamental problem: when an AI agent acts, it uses its permissions, not the requesting user’s. Traditional IAM evaluates the agent’s identity, not the human’s intent. The attribution gap cuts both ways: a shared agent identity ties actions to no one, while an inherited token ties them to the wrong someone. This breaks every assumption about authorization.
1.3 Why organizations should care right now
The identity explosion
Machine identities now vastly outnumber human ones, and most are invisible, over-privileged, and never rotated. The categories pile up faster than anyone reviews them:

2. WHAT — definition & taxonomy
2.1 What is Identity & Privilege Abuse?
Definition: Identity & Privilege Abuse occurs when attackers exploit inherited credentials, cached tokens, delegated permissions, or agent-to-agent trust to perform unauthorized actions — or when agents themselves escalate or leak privileges beyond their intended scope.
OWASP defines agent identity to include:
The agent’s defined persona (who it claims to be)
All authentication material (keys, tokens, sessions)
All delegated permissions (what it can do)
All tool credentials (what systems it can access)
Key insight: an AI agent is an aggregation point for multiple identities. When it operates, it acts with the combined authority of every credential assigned to it.

What it is: attackers steal OAuth tokens, API keys, or credentials and use them to impersonate trusted agents.

What it is: in multi-agent systems, trust relationships between agents create privilege escalation paths.
Why it matters: a compromised orchestrator is a single point of failure for every downstream agent’s credentials. The Salesloft Drift breach demonstrated this at the integration layer: one trusted connector’s stolen tokens cascaded into 700+ downstream organizations.
I5: Semantic privilege escalation
What it is: the agent exceeds its instructions while staying within its permissions. It does things it’s authorized to do but shouldn’t do for the current task.

3. WHO — threat actors & targets
3.1 Who attacks agent identities?
Key insight from 2025: the Salesloft Drift attackers (UNC6395) weren’t after ransomware payments — they were credential harvesters, searching exfiltrated data for AWS keys, Snowflake tokens, and passwords to enable future attacks.

Critical observation: activity during Phase 4 is nearly indistinguishable from legitimate agent behavior. The tokens are valid. The API calls are expected. The data access is authorized. Only behavioral anomaly detection can catch it.

Were nested credentials exposed? Secrets pasted into tickets, configs, or case text are the real prize in harvesting attacks.
Which downstream systems and agents trusted this identity? Map the trust chain, including agent-to-agent delegation.
How long was the token valid and in use? Dwell time runs from first anomalous use to revocation — not to detection.
